Art Gallery of Guelph Appoints New Senior Curator

The Art Gallery of Guelph is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Hunter as Senior Curator.

Most recently, Hunter served as Fredrik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where he produced landmark exhibitions and publications including Every. Now. Then: Reframing Nationhood (co-curated with Anique Jordan), Lawren Harris: The Idea of North (co-curated with Steve Martin and Cynthia Burlingham), and Alex Colville, as well as initiating major acquisitions of the work of Shuvinai Ashoona, Ruth Cuthand, Robert Houle, and Tim Pitsiulak.

Hunter joins the Art Gallery of Guelph at a pivotal moment as the gallery establishes new strategic direction, advancing the vital role of the arts in critical 21st century conversations while nurturing connections across civic and university communities. “Andrew is an innovative and inclusive leader whose curatorial work is informed by national and international currents as well as close attention to the local community,” said Shauna McCabe, Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Guelph. “He has a proven track record for developing interdisciplinary initiatives that have collaboration, accessibility, and reciprocity at their core – values the gallery holds in highest regard. I am delighted to bring him onto
our team.”

A graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Hunter brings nearly thirty years of diverse experience as an accomplished curator, writer and educator, having worked regionally, nationally and internationally with institutions including artist-run centres, public museums, and universities. Hunter has previously held curatorial positions across Canada, including the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Vancouver Art Gallery, Kamloops Art Gallery, and the University of Waterloo. As an independent artist and curator, he has produced exhibitions and publications in Canada, the United States, England, China, and Croatia, as well as co-founding the international creative research project DodoLab, with Lisa Hirmer. A visiting lecturer for art schools and institutions throughout the country, he is currently an instructor at Ontario College of Art and Design University.

Hunter was selected after a search of candidates from across Canada and internationally, and with input from diverse constituents and stakeholders. “I am thrilled to join the Art Gallery of Guelph at this moment of transformation,” Hunter states. “I look forward to working within this connected, interdisciplinary, learning organization that is present in its community and values creative criticality and meaningful engagement.”
