After much consideration of the extension of the state of emergency in Ontario, and details released Monday and Tuesday regarding Stage 2 of reopening and specifications for childcare and camp settings, the Art Gallery of Guelph will be adjusting the delivery of Camp Create this summer to a blend of virtual instruction and hands-on activities supported by Camp-To-Go kits full of art materials.
Led by our fabulous educators Emilie McNamara and Addi Lemmon, Camp Create will maintain the same schedule of thematic weeks, with daily activities that include a live 90 minute virtual creative session with our Camp Create counsellors each morning at 10:30 am and a second drop-in program at 3:30 pm. The best part? Each camp comes with all of the supplies you need – Camp-To-Go kits can be picked up prior to the beginning of each week of camp and will contain materials to be used in art-making over the course of five days, additional art-based activities to do at home, and materials to support creative field trips for the whole family. As kits will also be accompanied by printed instructions, screen time is optional. Families can take part in all or occasional virtual sessions.
Each weekly camp introduces a variety of materials and concepts, evoking curiosity and honing critical thinking while supporting social interaction and collaboration. Camp Create teaches kids how to look at, talk about, and create art inspired by great ideas. Each week, participants will also create artwork that will be featured in larger initiatives underway at the gallery, including the Living Rooms project. A partnership of the AGG and Guelph Museums, the creative contributions of campers will become part of a community publication inspired by living spaces during the pandemic. Each week will also conclude with a virtual exhibition of student work.
Zoom meetings will be available daily for the week they are enrolled in camp. Each daily morning session lasts for 90 minutes and is led by experienced museum educators in small groups to ensure a hands-on and engaging experience focused on social interaction, collaboration, and art-making using materials from the Camp-To-Go kits. Afternoon drop-in sessions from 3:30 to 4:30 pm allow campers to show and talk about things they have made with the counsellors, and to further connect with other campers.
Prior to each camp week, parents will receive details about the schedule and an introduction to our educators who will provide a synopsis of what to expect. The cost for Camp-To-Go kits with materials, instruction and facilitation is $125 per week. Submit your registration form to email@example.com.
Thank you so much for your support of the Art Gallery of Guelph. We look forward to having your emerging artists with us this summer!
Technical Requirements for Virtual Camps: A computer, tablet or other device is required with an internet or data connection. A Zoom test connection is recommended prior to camp beginning. A webcam and microphone on the device are encouraged, but campers can follow along without those two components. A secure link for the daily connection will be sent the week before camp begins with our camp newsletter and parents will be kept updated as to the materials and tools that will be used for each day’s activities!
